In 2003 I was awarded the Commonwealth of Dominica Island Scholarship for Academic Excellence in the A Level Examinations. I chose to pursue a course of study in Law at the University of the West Indies, Cave Hill Campus, Barbados. In my second year of study I learnt that my scholarship would not cover Law School.
In order to be an Attorney-at-Law in the Caribbean it is necessary to obtain a Legal Certificate of Education (LEC) which is awarded after a two year course of study at one of the Law Schools of the Legal Council of Education.
I had no money to go to Law School. My family's financial situation was already strained and it would not have been wise to undertake additional debt. I turned to God. Of course the doubtful and worrying thoughts constantly attacked. I cried out to God, reminding Him of His promises of provision and faithfulness in the bible. In December 2006 when I came home on vacation I sowed a seed in the Land Project. In April of the next year, on Super Seed Sunday my sister also sowed a seed on my behalf. In a time of personal devotion and worship at my apartment in Barbados God gave me a word. He said that He had already provided.
After the end of my final semester I came home to Dominica. There was an advertisement for the F.O.C Harris Memorial Scholarship which would be awarded to one applicant with an LLB (Bachelor of Laws) Honours degree. I applied, praying to God for favour. I also sought additional help from the government knowing that even if I was successful in obtaining the scholarship it would not cover all of my expenses.
All this happened in late June 2007. Two months passed and I heard nothing. I received my package of acceptance from Hugh Wooding Law School and I still had no means of going. I began to worry. Did God forget me? Did God lie when He said that He is faithful? During this period one thought constantly ravaged my mind, "God I have no money for Law School!"
It was also during this period at Lifeline Christian Fellowship that Pastor Joseph was teaching on faith and having a renewed mind. Pastor exhorted us to get rid of unbelief, 'lame it, don't tame it'. God was speaking directly to me. He had already given me His word. All I had to do was trust Him and believe it. In James we are exhorted to ask in faith without doubting since he who doubts is like a wave of the sea, driven by the wind and tossed. And let not a man who doubts believe he will receive anything from God. I decided to believe God and thank Him for His provision since He had already provided.
Two weeks before school was due to begin God worked it out, in spite of me. God even exceeded my expectations. I was awarded the F.O.C Harris Scholarship but was then offered the continuation of the scholarship I had at Cave Hill. It would cover not only tuition but also living expenses. My God gave me money for Law School!
God is indeed a God of miracles.
